Legal information for real estate brokers

Before you call:

  • Please note that many of the questions the Hotline receives have already been answered in Commonwealth articles, please check the indexed Hotline archives before calling.
  • You must be a principal broker and have completed an application before calling the Legal Hotline. The supervising broker and one other designated person from each office (for example, an associate broker or office manager) may register as designees of the principal broker.

Call handling process:
When you call, please have your NRDS number ready, and put it on any e-mailed questions. Most calls and emails will be handled by VAR Counsel Lem Marshall.

The hotline is not a service for real estate consumers. Consumers and members of the public who have questions about their REALTOR® or their transaction should contact either the firm's managing or principal broker. Questions about ethical behavior should be directed to the nearest Local Association of REALTORS®. Questions about law or regulation should be directed to the Virginia Real Estate Board at (804) 367-8500.
