Virginia Real Estate Board Licensing Requirements
NEW: All active licensees renewing their license between 7/1/2007 and 6/30/2009, must complete two hours in Limited Service Agency. This is in addition to your continuing education or post license education.
For continuing education, you are required to complete a minimum of 16 hours of continuing education, with eight of those hours in:

Ethics & Standards of Conduct;

Legal Updates & Emerging Trends;
-
Real Estate Agency;
-
Real Estate Contracts; and,
-
mandatory topics and elective topics.

To obtain continuing education/post licensure education credits:
1) Contact your Local Association for details.
2) Consider taking GRI courses that provide CE credit; an explanation of the program is available here.
3) Continuing education for real estate specialties is also available. Check the specialty group pages for the education calendar or the affiliate chapter pages for class schedules. A number of these classes have been approved for continuing education.
To check your current status for credits received, please visit the Virginia Dept. of Occupational Regulations website. Fair Housing (a minimum of 2 hours and needs to include an update on current cases and administrative decisions under Fair Housing Laws).
The remaining hours may be real estate related or in the mandatory topics.
Attention Principal Brokers, Associate Brokers and Sole Proprietor Licensees: As of 7/1/08, you will need 8 hours in Broker Supervision/Management. This is in addition to the 16 hours noted above.
If you are a new licensee (and in your first two year licensing period), you will be required to take 30 hours of education within the first two years of licensure. As of 7/1/08, new licensees will be required to complete the requirements within their first year of licensure.

As a new licensee, you must choose a practice track: Residential, Property Management, or Commercial. You choose a practice track by taking an approved mandatory course within the practice track.
